Vitamin D

Vitamin D is necessary for the healthy development of bones. We receive Vitamin D through diet and exposure to the sun.

New studies are finding that kids with disabilities are at risk of not getting enough Vitamin D because they sometimes don't spend any time out in the sun, particularly during long periods of hospitalisation. A Vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets, which can be quite painful.

Of course, it's important that we don't over expose our children to the sun! Too much sun is just as bad as too little.

There are some helpful links on the government website www.healthinsite.gov.au/topics/Vitamin_D but please if you have any concerns for your child, speak to a doctor.
